DOJ opposes Native woman in file sharing case

The Department of Justice is siding with the recording industry in a music sharing case involving a Native woman from Minnesota.

Jammie Thomas, a member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, was found guilty of sharing copyrighted material over the Internet. She was fined $220,000 for 24 songs.

Thomas is appealing the verdict. But in a brief filed this week government attorneys said the judgment was fair.

Thomas, a single mother of two, works her tribe and lives on the reservation. She has been updating her myspace blog to talk about the case and her financial situation. She is raising money for her appeal through FreeJammie.com.
