Smithsonian returns Sitting Bull artifacts to family

The National Museum of Natural History returned items belonging to Lakota Chief Sitting Bull to his descendants.

The items were taken from Sitting Bull around his death in 1890. His great-grandson, Ernie LaPointe, received them on Wednesday.

"My great-grandfather stood for the freedom of the land, he stood for his people, and he was murdered for this," LaPointe said, the Associated Press reported. "He stood his ground until the end."

LaPointe will hold a ceremony December 15 to decide what to do with the items.
