Vermont commission wants to recognize tribes

The Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs wants the authority to recognize state tribes.

The commission is proposing legislation to establish a recognition process. State Sen. Vince Illuzzi, a Republican, said he would sponsor the bill.

A 2006 state law recognized the Abenaki Nation. But members of the commission say other tribes need to be recognized in order for tribal members to market their goods as Indian. The federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act applies to state and federally recognized tribes.
