Southern Ute man sentenced for manslaughter

Alan Herrera Jr., a member of the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, was sentenced to three years probation for involuntary manslaughter.

Herrera, 22, pleaded guilty to killing his best friend, Kesmond Lee Morgan. The March 2007 shooting was accidental.

Federal prosecutors could have sought six to 10 months in prison, plus fines and probation. But they recommended no prison and five years on probation.

After hearing from the victim's parents, who pleaded for leniency, Judge Walker Miller decided on probation.
