The Department of Homeland Security improperly awarded a contract to an Alaska Native firm, The Washington Post reports.
The nine-year, $475 million contract was awarded to Chenega Technology Services on the basis of the firm's purported status as a "tribally-owned" business. But the Inspector General at DHS said Chenega did not qualify and ended up passing on most of the work to subcontractors in violation of federal regulations.
Chenega Technology Services is a subsidiary of Chenega Corporation, an Alaska Native regional corporation.
ANCs are not tribes or tribal government entities.
