Census: 169,000 Native American veterans

There are nearly 169,000 American Indian and Alaska Native veterans, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Native Americans serve in the military at the highest rates per capita of any racial or ethnic group. There are about 23.7 million veterans overall in the U.S.

Robert Doren, a Lakota who served in Vietnam, works at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. He hopes to ensure Native veterans aren't invisible.

"It's OK to ask for help," Doren tells The Deseret Morning News . "We know that there's many, many Native American vets out there."
