Meth called a scourge on Flathead Reservation
Thursday, November 8, 2007

Methamphetamine has become a scourge on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, a health official for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes said.

Kevin Howlett, the director of Tribal Health and Human Services, said residents of the reservation and of Lake County spent an estimated $8 million on meth in 2006. That's the entire budget of the tribe's health programs.

"The scourge of meth across Lake County and the Flathead Reservation really does require an immediate and concerted effort," Howlett said at a press conference in Washington, D.C., The Billings Gazette reported.

Howlett said more money needs to be spent on law enforcement and education to combat meth.
