Red Lake child protection services at issue

The Red Lake Nation of Minnesota is seeking funding to pay for the costs of child protective services.

The tribe has been paying for the services after pulling out of an agreement with Beltrami County. The county has since agreed to reimburse the tribe $2 million for nearly a year of services.

But the tribe says the county owes more money. An internal tribal memo put the cost at more than $4 million.

The state, meanwhile, is threatening to sue the county for not paying for child protective services. The state contends the agreement between the tribe and the county is still valid.
