Native woman wins $2K human rights judgment

A Native woman in Saskatchewan won a $2,000 human rights judgment against her former landlord.

Marjorie Starr was moving out of her apartment in Prince Albert when landlord Glenn Olson made disparaging remarks about Native people. "You have to admit Indians are the dirtiest people to rent to," Olson told Starr, according to the Saskatchewan Human Rights Tribunal.

"While I have had white families do their share of damage to property over the years, I have personally observed that Native families tend to have more children and more visiting house guests and as a result create more wear and tear and damage to the property," Olson said in a statement given to the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.

Olson said he would not challenge the tribunal's decision.
