Cheyenne River woman gets time for boy's death

A woman from the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota was sentenced to 13 months in connection with a 3-year-old boy's death.

Amanda Marisa Little Elk, 23, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She failed to check up on Trevor Little Wounded when he was brought to a day care center when she worked.

Little Wounded exhibited signs of hyperthermia while in day care but Little Elk didn't follow up. The boy died the next day of organ failure.

In addition to prison time, Little Elk was ordered to pay $9,400 restitution to the boy's parents, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, social services programs and crime victims' programs.
