City won't give land to Nansemond Tribe

The city council in Suffolk, Virginia, has killed a plan to give land to the Nansemond Tribe.

The tribe wants the land to build a replica of a historic village. The project is estimated to cost $8 million.

The council voted 5-2 on the project. But public land exchanges require approval by six of seven council members, so it failed.

The city will instead consider leasing 70 acres to the tribe. A public hearing is scheduled for January 2, 2008.
