The Hopland Band of Pomo Indians of California is developing its own police force.
The tribe's officers have federal cross commissions and can enforce federal law on the reservation.
Now the tribe wants to put prisoners in Mendocino County jail and wants access to state and federal criminal databases.
California is a Public Law 280 state, so the state has jurisdiction on reservations. A handful of tribes, however, have their own police forces and have worked with local law enforcement.
