Native American students seek campus welcome

Native American students are trying to increase their ranks at colleges and universities in Virginia.

It's an uphill battle. According to the Associated Press, there are only 20 Native students at the University of Virginia, 70 at Virginia Tech, 99 at George Mason University and 172 at Virginia Commonwealth University.

"It's kind of like a paradox. If you don't have enough American Indian programs, you don't have enough American Indians," Monty Johns Jr., who is Cayuga, told the AP. "If you don't have enough American Indians, you don't have enough programs."

Johns is head of U.Va.'s new American-Indian Student Union and has created a program to welcome Native students to campus.
