Federal funding restored to Catawba Nation

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina is getting back on its feet with the restoration of federal funds.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs cut all of the tribe's 638 contracts in 2004. The tribe failed to conduct annual audits.

The move came at a bad time for the tribe. Its longtime executive director was indicted for theft and the tribe's main source of revenue -- a high stakes bingo hall -- was losing business.

With the resumption of federal funds, the tribe is starting to rehire people at its Longhouse. Sixty employees had been laid off.
