Narragansett chief faces challenger next month

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island holds an election next month to choose a new chief sachem.

Matthew Thomas, 46, has led the tribe for 10 years. He has been involved in a number of high-profile disputes, including several legal cases and proposals to open a commercial casino.

Paulla Dove Jennings, 67, a former council member, is the only other candidate running. If elected, she would be the first women to serve as chief sachem in more than 100 years.

Thomas is running again to continue fighting the legal and political battles. Jennings says the tribe needs a new direction, citing the recent disenrollment of a large family.

The election takes place October 27.
