"The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's plan to build an indoor water park in Ledyard is potentially good news for a town seeking to expand its commercial tax base and for tourist-based businesses hoping to attract more visitors to the region.
But for those who live near the proposed park — the exact location has not been announced, though it is reportedly near the tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino — such a large-scale project would substantially increase traffic on local roads that many feel already are overburdened by the thousands of cars, buses and service vehicles that travel to and from the world's largest casino every day.
Residents and town officials, who had virtually no say at all when Foxwoods was built more than 15 years ago, will now have a chance to ask: Is such a project worth it?
The town must consider the pros and cons of allowing such a development. Today it has an improved, working relationship with the tribe, and it should use that to its advantage to determine whether the water park is the right fit for Ledyard."
