Director promises more Navajo-themed films

After calling his first movie a success, director Travis Hamilton plans to make more movies that accurately portray the Navajo people.

Hamilton, who is non-Indian, shot "Turquoise Rose" entirely on the Navajo Nation. He drew 90 percent of his cast and crew from tribal members.

"There's a quote by [Windtalkers director] John Woo," Hamilton said Friday in Kirtland, New Mexico, The Farmington Daily Times reported. "He said he auditioned over 400 Navajos and never found any of them with any experience. But I found that you've got to get Navajos from the Nation and you've got to be given an opportunity to gain experience. I believe in you guys."

"Turquoise Rose" depicts the coming-of-age of a Navajo girl who is called back to the reservation to care for her ailing grandmother.
