Navajo Nation seeks to upgrade airstrips

The Navajo Nation is working on plans to upgrade the airstrips on its vast reservation.

The tribe's Department of Transportation will hold the first Navajo Nation Airport in Window Rock, Arizona, on Wednesday to discuss the effort. "The reservation is a vast place, and airports would make all these areas a little bit more accessible," Rutherford Ashley, a spokesperson for the department told The Farmington Daily Times.

The tribe has airstrips in Window Rock, Chinle, Arizona; Kayenta, Arizona; Tuba City, Arizona; Crownpoint, New Mexico; Ganado, Arizona; Oljato, Arizona; and Shiprock, New Mexico. Only the one in Window Rock is considered a fully-functioning airport.
