Navajo student on quest to develop constitution

Ivan Gamble, a member of the Navajo Nation, is on a quest to develop a new constitution for his tribe.

Since September 4, Gamble has been traveling across the reservation to talk about the need for a constitution. His 14-day, 380-mile ride ends this week in Colorado.

"Everyone around the world knows what a Navajo is, and we have this huge Nation with hundreds of thousands of Navajos, but we haven't identified our sovereignty yet," Gamble said at the Native American Center at San Juan College, The Farmington Daily Times reported "I believe very strongly that this is the next step in the progression of the Navajo Nation."

Gamble has collected more than 6,500 signatures on his petition for a constitution. He is working on a bill to create Navajo constitutional convention.
