Bush expected to nominate new Attorney General

President Bush is expected to nominate a new U.S. Attorney General this week.

Former Solicitor General Ted Olson is a top contender, according to The Washington Post. Other possible nominees include former deputy attorney general George J. Terwilliger III and D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Laurence H. Silberman, who sat on panels that have ruled against the Cobell plaintiffs.

Olson handled the U.S. Supreme Court for the Bush administration from June 2001 to July 2004. He took two prominent trust cases to the court but the justices rejected his argument to restrict the government's liability for breach of trust.

Previously, as an attorney in private practice, Olson represented a white rancher who successfully challenged an election restricted to Native Hawaiians. He is currently representing a Canadian company accused of polluting the Colville Reservation in Washington -- a case for which the Supreme Court has asked the Department of Justice to submit a brief.
