Cherokee Nation to celebrate 55th annual holiday

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is celebrating its 55th annual Cherokee National Holiday this weekend.

The holiday began in 1953 as a tribute to the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. The three-day event attracts more than 90,000 to the tribal headquarters in Tahlequah.

This year's theme is "Common Values, Common Ground." It marks the 169 years of Cherokee Nation's existence in Oklahoma, as well as the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma’s statehood.

Events start Friday and conclude on Sunday.
