Eddie Palmanteer, Colville leader, dies at 75

Eddie Adrian Palmanteer Jr., a longtime leader of the Confederated Colville Tribes of Washington, died last Friday. He was 75.

Palmanteer was chairman when the tribe settled a dispute over the loss of fishing, land and burial grounds to the Grand Coulee Dam. "For some of our members no amount of money can fairly compensate the tribes for this loss," he told Congress, the Associated Press reported.

Palmanteer, an Army veteran, was a former superintendent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs' agency in Colville and was board president of Colville Tribal Enterprises Corp., the tribe's economic development corporation.
