Delaware elders oppose Cherokee deal

The Delaware Tribe's elders committee is opposing a federal recognition deal with the Cherokee Nation.

The elders say the proposed legislation doesn't give the Delaware Tribe true sovereignty. They say the Cherokee Nation will still have control over the Delaware Tribe.

The Cherokee Nation went to court to have the Delaware Tribe removed from the list of federally recognized entities. The Cherokees cited an 1866 treaty -- the same one at issue in the Freedmen case.
