OST tries to find owners of millions in trust funds

The Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians is looking for more than 45,000 beneficiaries who are owed more than $60 million in trust funds.

OST's list of "whereabouts unknown" accounts keeps growing, according to reports filed in court. About 4,000 Navajo beneficiaries are on the list.

"It's unconscionable for us to have $50,000, $60,000 or $100,000 and not do everything in our power to find them." John Roach, a fiduciary trust officer in New Mexico told The Farmington Daily Times.

Some people are on the list because OST doesn't have current addresses. Others don't even know they are owed money.
