Nottawaseppi Huron Band builds health clinic

The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians plan to open the doors to the tribe's first health clinic in January 2008.

Construction on the $1.1 million facility should be completed by the end of the year. The 6,200-square-foot clinic will serve tribal members who live on and off the reservation.

The tribe hopes the clinic will improve health standards. Mark Smit, the health director, cites high rates of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and mental illnesses.

Funding is an issue. The tribe hopes a casino will generate revenues to pay for more services.
