Squaxin Island village vandalized again

For the second time in two years, vandals have struck a Squaxin Island village in Washington.

Qwu?gwes is a 700-year-old fish camp and seafood-processing site. Archaeologists are excavating the village with the participation of the Squaxin Island Tribe.

Two years ago this month, vandals broke into the village and destroyed artifacts. This time, someone stole some equipment and damaged the site.

"It's like a personal invasion," Larry Ross, a tribal cultural resource specialist, told The Olympian.

The village is considered one of the most significant in the South Sound Students at South Puget Sound Community College have uncovered clam baskets woven from the roots of cedar trees, necklace beads, bone carving tools and remnants of a fishing net woven from cedar bark.
