Two Oregon tribes hope the House Natural Resources Committee will approve a bill that will pave the way for an economic development project.
The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes Of Siletz Indians jointly own about 20 acres that was once part of the Chemawa Indian School. They want to develop the land for a retail and office center.
But a provision in the federal government's deed to the tribes prevents them from securing financing for the project. The bill pending in the House would allow the tribes to develop the land without affecting other federal laws.
S.375 has already passed the Senate. It was heard by the House committee last week and will be considered at a
markup today.
