Cree Nation announces $1.4B deal with Canada

The Grand Council of the Crees announced a $1.4 billion settlement with Canada to pay for impacts of a major hydroelectric dam in Quebec.

The Crees were promised $225 million when the La Grande dam was built 30 years ago. But none of the money came through as both sides disputed how to implement the 1975 James Bay Agreement.

The $1.4 billion settlement will end litigation over the agreement. The Crees will use the money to improve health, law enforcement, justice and economic programs in northern Quebec.

The Grand Council will put the deal to a vote by Cree communities in the coming months. The Canadian government still has to finalize it.
