Mescalero Apache Nation limits school bus traffic

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico is limiting school bus traffic on the reservation, a school district off the reservation says.

The tribe is not allowing buses to leave U.S.70 to pick up students who attend schools in Tularosa. The board of education says the policy might be illegal.

"Our concern is that it may prevent children from an education, and children should have the right to choose which school they want to attend," superintendent Brenda Vigil said, The Alamagordo Times reported.

The board said it will to get the state to work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to resolve the issue.
