Johnson O'Malley funds keep Indian youth connected

The public school district in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is using Johnson O’Malley funds to keep urban Indian students connected to tribal culture.

About 30 students are taking part in a six-week summer program. In the morning, they work on academics and in the afternoon they work on art and culture.

“I want them to have that strong tribal connection,” Cookie Gonzales, the director of the program, told The Santa Fe New Mexican.

President Bush has repeatedly eliminated the JOM program from his budget. Congress has restored the funds, citing their benefits for Indian students in public schools.
