Mohegan Tribe buys historic boulder used by chief

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has purchased Cochegan Rock, the largest freestanding boulder in New England.

During the 17th century, Chief Uncas used to hold tribal council meetings at the rock. The boulder measures 75 feet long, 58 feet wide and 68 feet high, and weighs an estimated 6,000 tons.

The tribe purchased the 92-acre site where the boulder sits and will allow continued use by the Connecticut Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
