Indian students settle lawsuit with school district

Indian students in South Dakota announced a settlement to their discrimination lawsuit against the Winner School District.

On behalf of 10 Indian students, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe sued the school district. They said Indian students were subjected to harsher disciplinary practices than non-Indians.

The school district denied discrimination but agreed to settle the case. The district will hire the full-time Indian liaison, work with an expert to improve Indian student achievement, consult with Indian parents to review disciplinary incidents, provide training for students and teachers, incorporate Indian culture into school activities and offer a course of Indian culture, history and language.

All parties in the suit hailed the agreement as ground breaking.
