House passes Native American One Dollar Coin Act

By a voice vote, the House on Tuesday approved H.R.2358, the Native American $1 Coin Act.

The bill authorizes new designs for the back of the Sacagawea dollar coin. "I was glad to introduce this bill. I can think of no better way to pay tribute to the Native American people than to honor their contribution to the development of the United States and her history," said Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Michigan), the sponsor.

The designs will be approved by the Department of Treasury in consultation with the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, House Congressional Native American Caucus, National Congress of American Indians, U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

The Senate version is S.585.
