Health care discussed at conference in Montana

The state of Indian health care in Montana was discussed at a conference in Missoula on Thursday.

Indians in Montana have high rates of disease, death and infant mortality. But Katherine Gottlieb, president and CEO of the Southcentral Foundation, said the situation can be turned around when Natives take control of their own programs.

Gottlieb said the foundation, which provides health care to about 45,000 people, puts culture "at the core of everything that we do." "We live it, breathe it, eat it," she said, The Missoulan reported.

The foundation gets about 45 percent of its budget from the Indian Health Service.
