Tom Dowd resigns from BIA education post

Tom Dowd, the director of education at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, has resigned his post.

Dowd, a member of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, announced his resignation during a meeting last week. He plans to leave in August.

"He's done a tremendous job," said Nedra Darling, a spokesperson for the BIA. Darling had no further comments and Dowd is out of the office this week.

Dowd has been on the job for about a year. He was the first director of the Bureau of Indian Education, formerly known as the Office of Indian Education Programs.
