Author wants Natives to end dance with dependency

Calvin Helin, a member of the Tsimshian Nation from British Columbia, blames the "Indian Industry" for keeping Native people from advancing.

"The 'Indian industry' is all of those people who are making a living off of our misery," Helin tells The Regina Leader-Post.

In his new book, "Dances with Dependency," Helin urges Native people to stop depending on the Canadian government. He says money isn't the answer to problems on First Nations, and that it only ends up worsening the situation.

"You would think with $9 billion a year, we would be able to solve this problem," Helin said. "If money was the problem, we should have been able to get a long way from where we are now."

Helin says Native people need to take control of their destiny, develop more transparent governments and become more involved in the economy.
