Nisqually Tribe seeks to acquire military property

The Nisqually Tribe of Washington is seeking support for the transfer of 514 acres of military land.

The tribe has talked to local officials and members of Congress about the swap. The land includes the Fort Lewis Golf Course.

Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg has endorsed the proposal. But some local officials say the county has first rights to the land because it was part of a donation to the military back in 1917.

However, the donation included about two-thirds of the original 4,717-acre Nisqually Reservation, which the county took by condemnation.
