First Nation starts college preparatory program

The Fisher River First Nation in Manitoba has started a college prep program in hopes of helping students succeed.

The tribe spends about $13,000 per year for each college student. But most of them drop out before obtaining their degrees, said Nora Murdock, the education director.

In hopes of changing the situation, all college-bound students will have to complete an eight-month transition program to help them adjust to college life. "It's about developing the skills that they need to survive and succeed in the workplace or in the educational system," Russell Kirkness, who is setting up the program, told CBC News.
