Ute Mountain Ute church holds services after fire

Members of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of Colorado held services at their Presbyterian Church on Sunday, just days after vandals set fire to the building.

About 25 parishioners gathered outside to pray. “They can’t stop the service,” said Arlene Lang, daughter of the church’s lay minister, The Cortez Journal reported. “They can’t stop people from worshipping.”

Vandals struck the church on Thursday. They left graffiti and burned the building.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is investigating and may treat the fire as a hate crime, an agent said. Two persons of interest -- reportedly minors -- have been identified.
