Cheyenne-Arapaho leader seeks Washita change

Darrell Flyingman, the governor of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, vowed to change the name of the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site.

The site marks the November 27, 1868, massacre of more than 100 Cheyenne men, women and children by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his soldiers. Flyingman said it was wrong to call the site a battlefield.

"What happened here at Washita was a massacre. In fact, I don't know how anyone can call this a battlefield," he said, The Oklahoman reported. ""And I will do everything in my power to get that name changed."

Flyingman spoke at the dedication ceremony for a new cultural center at the site.
