Seneca Nation withdraws agreement for highway

The Seneca Nation has rescinded an agreement to allow the New York Thruway to pass through tribal land.

The issue is separate from an escalating fight over tobacco and sales taxes on the reservation. But Seneca President Maurice John Sr. said both represent the state's broken promises to the tribe.

In 1954, the state paid the tribe $75,000 and agreed to compensate tribal members for the Thruway. John said those individual payments never came.

John said the only taxes that will be collected on the reservation would be a toll on the Thruway.
