Shinnecock leaders requested probe of drug trafficking

Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation of New York reacted with sadness after authorities raided the reservation on Thursday but noted they sought an investigation of drug trafficking.

The tribe's board of trustees contacted the Suffolk County district attorney to look into "heavy drug activity," The New York Times reported. The probe culminated with the arrest of more than a dozen people and the seizure of drugs and weapons.

Among those arrested was Awan Gumbs, the son of Lance Gumbs, a prominent tribal leader. It was not known if he knew his son was dealing drugs, but authorities said Awan used his father's smoke shop as a place to sell cocaine.

"Today, our people walk with tears in their eyes knowing that some members of our family will suffer, but hopeful that the scourge we have been living with is about to come to an end and our community restored to its natural beauty and balance," the board of trustees said, The Times reported.
