The Navajo Nation Council approved $748,932 in emergency funds to fix a detention center in Chinle, Arizona.
The money will be used to bring the Chinle Adult Detention Center up to code. The facility was closed last week due to safety concerns.
The closure means offenders are being sent to other facilities, which are already overcrowded and face similar safety issues. The Navajo Nation Division of Health is going to close a detention center in Tuba City because it was condemned.
