Museums face deadline to comply with NAGPRA

Museums and federal agencies have until October 20 to complete summaries of their collections or holdings under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Under the law, museums that receive federal funding must submit a summary of their Native remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. Federal agencies must do the same.

Since the law was passed in 1990, 774 museums and 289 federal agencies have submitted 774 museums and 289. The deadline applies to those institutions that have received new collections or holdings since submitting their last summary, or those with collections or holdings affiliated with newly recognized tribes.

The deadline was included in a March 21 Federal Register notice about future applicability of NAGPRA.
