A domestic violence shelter on the Navajo Nation is scheduled to open this fall.
The $4.5 million Home for Women and Children is located in Shiprock, New Mexico. It was designed to look like a hogan, a traditional Navajo home.
The 22,000 square-foot facility, almost four times the size of the old shelter, will provide room for eight women and 25 children. It will host programs to support domestic violence victims.
Money for the project came from the Navajo Housing Authority, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Agriculture; the state of New Mexico and the Frederick Lion Heart Foundation.
