Colorado Senate opposes urban Indian health cut

The Colorado Senate voted 34-0 on Friday on a resolution to oppose President Bush's proposal to eliminate the $33 million urban Indian health program.

Democrat Sen. Suzanne Williams, a member of the Cherokee Nation, sponsored the resolution. "Thirty thousand urban Indians in this area would be having to go to our emergency rooms for care, and that doesn't make sense, does it?" she said, The Durango Herald reported.

Republican Rep. Ellen Roberts will sponsor the resolution in the House. "It's very important for people to understand how many Native Americans are here in the metro area," she said.

The resolution also urges support for law enforcement services at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
