Dispute over road involves rival bands of Mi-wuks

The dispute over a road in Calaveras County, California, involves rival bands of Mi-wuk Indians.

The Calaveras Band of Mi-Wuk Indians has asserted jurisdiction over the Bald Mountain Road, which apparently runs through 80 acres of trust land. But the Calaveras County Mountain Mi-Wuk Tribe says its members are being harassed by the other band.

Rocks have been thrown, nails have been sprinkled on the road and the situation could turn violent, the county sheriff has warned. Neither tribe, however, is recognized by the federal government.
