The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona will break ground this Saturday on a new diabetes center.
About 16 percent of tribal members have diabetes, more than twice the national rate. And the disease is beginning to show up in children under the age of 15.
In hopes of combating the situation, the tribe is building a fitness and wellness center. The 2,400-square-foot facility will include a weight room, cardio center, a junior Olympic swimming pool and basketball courts.
The tribe using a $2.2 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and $1.5 million of its own money to fund the project. A grand opening is slated for January 2008.
