Urban Indians in Phoenix protest Bush budget cut

Urban Indians in the Phoenix, Arizona, area are worried about the loss of their health care if President Bush goes through with a $33 million cut to the Indian Health Service.

The agency's fiscal year 2008 budget eliminates the entire urban Indian health program, a system of 34 clinics that serve more than 200,000 Native Americans. In Phoenix, the Native American Community Health Center would lose $2 million in federal funds.

Without the center, urban patients would be forced to go to non-Indan facilities or go back to their reservations. Elderly tribal members say it would be difficult for them to find alternative services.
