Wampanoag recognition decision comes early
Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Ahead of schedule, the Bureau of Indian Affairs will announce its final decision on federal recognition for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts on Thursday.

As part of a court case, the tribe and the BIA had agreed to a final determination by March 31. The answer will now come around 5pm on Thursday, a tribal spokesperson said.

The tribe received a favorable proposed finding in March 2006. With no opposition from the state or local governments, the final answer is expected to be positive.
